Welcome to the realyfe the "Faith in Action" life group of Abundant Life Church! I am excited to be on this faith journey with all of you, and am glad you decided to be apart of this exciting life group. This life group is all about what we can do as Christ followers to put or faith in action in our communities, work, social environment, and everyday life.
There are no rules of conduct in this group, so if you are looking for a step by step guide as to what we need to do to start making an impact in our community; well there are none. We can go to the new testament and observe and see what the disciples did. There are no limits as to what we can do, and the amount of effort we exert in making our communities around as a better place. JUST do something....feed the hungry.....cloth the naked......volunteer at a clinic.....visit somebody in jail......mentor a troubled teenager......cleanup a block.....volunteer at a food bank....visit the sick......read a newspaper to somebody at a nursing home...make friends with an outsider.......go to an AA meeting a make friends......eat lunch with a homeless person.....hang out with a prostitute. (That's what Jesus did)
Jesus gave the disciples a vision of "Unleashing the Kingdom of God" here on earth! I know that may seem like a foreign concept especially when most of the focus in institutionalized religion is on just following a bunch of rules so that you can go to heaven someday. I hope I am messing with your theology (the study of God) right now, because that was my goal....hehe
We have been called to do more than to just preach the gospel, but he has also called us to BE the gospel.....I know that may be a strange concept but Jesus made that a cornerstone of our thinking when he taught the disciples to pray in Matthew 6 "Thy Kingdom come they WILL be done on earth as it is in heaven" Thy Kingdom come.....I know I lose focus of that at times, so now is the time to step up and be the Kingdom.....be the gospel!
We will be planning two events for the month of September. I have arranged with the Collin County Clinic here in Plano to come a volunteer on either a Tuesday or Thursday night the second week of September. Toward the end of the month we can do cookout at a park in Plano, so we can email back and forth as to what dates works best for everybody else.
More to come,
Jason Barber
